Josh McCown is without question one of the most intriguing names to keep an eye on as NFL training camp and preseason action get underway. He is fighting for playing time with Robert Griffin III and is hoping to beat Griffin out for the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback job.

According to a report from Mary Kay Cabot of, McCown looks more ready to start early on in camp than Griffin does.

Pep Hamilton talked about McCown back in May and certainly sounded like he likes the veteran quarterback and there could be a serious competition brewing for the starting job.

“Josh is great,” Hamilton said. “He has field credibility, not only just in the quarterback room, but throughout our locker room. It has always been beneficial, just in my experience, to have veteran guys around. He has been a tremendous resource, not only for our quarterbacks but for our entire team. He is competing with all of our other quarterbacks to earn the right to be the starting quarterback.”

Last season with the Browns, McCown saw his season end early due to injury. He completed 63.7 percent of his pass attempts for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions.

At 37-years-old, the Browns could start McCown at any point throughout the course of the season. If Griffin gets off to a slow start, there is no question that head coach Hue Jackson would plug McCown into the starting lineup. There is obviously still a chance that he could open the season as the starter as well.

All of that being said, it will be interesting to see what happens in training camp and throughout the preseason. Both quarterbacks will feel pressure on their shoulders, but McCown has more experience. Griffin has had pressure throughout his entire career but has yet to prove that he can carry it on his shoulders and prove his doubters wrong.

Expect to see this competition last throughout the majority of the preseason. Jackson will not make his final call on the starting job until he sees everything that he can from both players. It is still likely that Griffin will end up starting, but it sounds like McCown is making up some of the distance between himself and Griffin.
