Rick Reilly rips Tiger Woods for his tipping habits

Rick Reilly is making the rounds to promote his new book entitled Tiger, Meet My Sister…And Other Things I Probably Shouldn’t Have Said. While on Conan this week, the soon-to-be-retired ESPN columnist ripped Tiger Woods for being a bad tipper.

“I’ve covered [Michael Jordan] his whole career, but I don’t think he can hold a candle to Tiger Woods. You need a court order to get Tiger’s wallet open. It’s unbelievable. He’s always like, ‘I don’t carry cash.’ I know a valet here in town that stands between Tiger and his car just to get his $2. He’s really terrible. I’ve seen Phil Mickelson buy a 50-cent cup of a lemonade from a little girl and give her $100. When he leaves the Masters each year, he gives the guys $2,500. Tiger gives them nothing. I was with Phil once, and it was raining. He sees a homeless guy, and he gets out, parks his car and gets out his umbrella to give to the guy. Tiger would charge the guy!”

I am with Tiger. Giving $100 for 50 cent lemonade juice is proper thing to do because he is rich? it is more of a show than genuine appreciation. Outrageous tipping is welfare mentality and these thing do nothing but harm to the society. When kid sells lemonade juice, 50 cents a cup, should experience real life by selling half day or all day to make $100 instead of one person who throw away a big bill, so the kid can pack and leave in 10 minutes and brag about it to other people.

    • Bh

you are clueless……. more money makes you more of who you are. Phil is a generous caring guy, he has it, he shares it. Tiger is a tightwad and an ass.

      • ihk888

despite Phil’s all American smile on TV, there was an article in Golf Magazine about survey among the PGA tour players who they would prefer to play a round of golf as a pleasure, Tiger beat Phils by wide margin. I assume they know more about these guys more we do.

        • J R Moses

OK………so what does that have to do with generosity and caring about others? If I had to choose between the two qualities…….I’ll take someone that cares for others over someone who might be more fun to play a round of golf with.

      • Lou Linden

Phil never shares his stock tips with me!

        • capcomm

          LMAO!!

      • Ferd Berfel

Great quote – “More money makes you more of who you are”. It truly fits here.

    • gerry tierney

      Oh STFU.

  • acehighflush

I had heard this from people in the tour business. TW is chronically cheap, and it is not flattering.

  • wimpdick

People love to take silly shots at Tiger while praising their beloved Phil. What’s written in the book that says Tiger has to be like Phil? They’re two totally different individuals with totally different personalities. Face it people, Phil can’t carry Tiger’s jock strap when it comes to playing golf. Tiger is the only player on the tour that is in position to break Nicklaus record of 18 major wins while also owning the record for most wins. All of this criticizing Tiger talk is all about jealousy. The fact is, he has accomplished something that the beloved Phil just doesn’t have the ability to accomplish. Go Tiger.

    • J R Moses

Your name is apparently appropriate………..oh that’s with a W……..thought it was an L. This has nothing to do with golf. Tiger is better than Phil. I think even Phil would concede that fact. This is about people CARING about other people. Someone with Tiger’s net worth would be very generous if they cared for anyone other than themselves…………kinda like Phil.

      • Nich Radcliffe

Nobody who’s ever spent time around Phil when no cameras or other media were around will praise him. I have several friends who used to volunteer at the Greater Western Open/BMW Championship when it was always in Chicago…all said the same thing…Phil’s an ass when there isn’t any media around. Especially in the scorer’s tent. Treat’s the volunteers lousy. And I am putting it nicely.

        • J R

Nich……..I will not dispute your claim……I have never been around Phil, so am not qualified to state anything as fact. I will only say that it surprises me. I have never before read or heard anything to the negative about Phil when it comes to being a good and caring person.

        • Sidney Carter

I had a friend that did the refrigeration at Pebble Beach for years. His opinion was that both guys are rude, stand-offish and very arrogant.

    • capcomm

“Face it people, Phil can’t carry Tiger’s jock strap when it comes to playing golf. ” This must be an older post than it looks like. Phil has two major wins and two 2nd’s since 2010 and Tiger? ….

      • astrodude

Really? Its about legacy… What will Tiger leave behind compared to Phil? There is no comparison… Tiger wins hands down….

Now if you don’t like Tiger as a person, that’s another issue… But there is nobody currently playing golf who can compare their accomplishments to Tigers. Nobody!!

        • Ferd Berfel

          Jordan Spieth!!

      • Brian

Has 7 TIMES more major victories, in a shorter period of time, and with larger margins of victory.

        • islander21

That would mean Tiger has 35 majors, which he doesn’t because last I checked, 7×5=35.

          • Brian

I agree. 7×5=35. Good math. That has *nothing* to do with my comment….which, when made, was accurate. He’s got 7 times more majors at the same as as Nicholas….and I’m right.

    • Bo Hart

hey wimpy dick that seems to fit you well

  • Joe Silver

A nobody like Rick Reilly trying to peddle his stupid book.

    • Sidney Carter

Do you think what he says is true? An insult does not make Tiger Woods any less cheap. He’s filthy rich and a skinflint. Bottom line.

  • allen_tawanda

Oh what nonsense! Good luck trying to fleece the public with that stupid book!

    • capcomm

Is it on Kindle yet? Who’s Your Caddy was effin’ brilliant! =8-)

  • gm5425

Even Tiger’s mistresses said he was cheap.

  • Jim Donato

Tiger is a notorious cheapskate and this is a well-know fact. He was playing blackjack in Vegas at a $100 table and tipped the dealer $5. At the end of the session he tossed her another $5 chip but took it back after he realized he’d already tipped her.

    • Nick Guadenzi

that would have been a good punchline if it unfortunately wasn’t a joke.

    • Jeff Sheaffer

JIm is right who cares how many majors you win!!? It’s the way you give back to society! Why doesn’t he start companies and employ people instead of just selling his name to the highest bidder?

    • Sidney Carter

      Lol

  • Chris Jackson

Rick is dead on…I was a valet at the Sawgrass Marriott from the 1996 to 1999 tournaments while in school. Tiger had just signed that huge deal with Nike. I checked him in and brought his bags up and got stiffed…so I took his 500SL out in the back parking lot and did donuts until I felt better. Phil tipped me $50 for his and Amy bags plus $50 more for Billy Mayfair’s gear and they took less time than Tiger. I do still have a golf ball that Tiger’s boy gave me…Titleist Professional with Tiger on the side. Mark O’Meara asked Tiger one night after we brought his Benz up so they could go to dinner if “he had taken care of us” and Tiger proudly said “No.” Mark looked at him and said “Tiger you have to take care of these boys….what is wrong with you?”

    • Lou Linden

How much did you sell the Tiger golf ball for?

      • Chris Jackson

I still have it!! No plans on getting rid of it…plus when I tell the story to my son, it will be better to have the golf ball to show him.

        • Lou Linden

Nice, I’m sure your son will appreciate that more and more as time goes by. I’m not a big fan of cheap tippers but if he would’ve flipped you a c-note instead you probably would have spent it, the ball with the story is better!

BTW, how’s the handling on those 500SL’s?

    • Niku

      You’re a real leech, aren’t you?

    • Ferd Berfel

Great story. I love it. Glad you had the chance to enjoy Tiger’s ride.

      • 2abner

riding the tiger by the tail:-?

  • alknows

Tipping is always optional. You don’t get to be a millionaire by throwing money around just because you can.

    • Lou Linden

I kind of have a feeling that if Tiger were a big tipper instead they’d denigrate that and categorize him as a cocky rich guy trying to buy his way around or something.
I know not everyone is a Tiger fan but I just try to focus on his accomplishments on the course even though I frown on cheap tippers no matter who they are.

    • Ferd Berfel

Tipping is not optional. You tip based on performance. Tiger became a millionaire by playing golf well, not by being a lousy tipper. Good people know this.

  • Randy Kranjec

I think this pretty much sums up why I personally am not a tiger fan–never dismissed what he’s done on the golf course–but this is one more example of what I’ve always heard about tiger–for him, it’s all about him–I hope he does play in the pga–it’s a nice change to see someone needing a driver to reach the par 3’s

    • astrodude

you da man!! Tiger can hit his 7 iron farther than you hit your driver…why is it people act like they know these guys?. you’ve heard?? Well what I’ve read, you’re a wanna be… that’s just what I read… might not be true, kinda like that’s what you heard… grow up…

  • theshawn

Sorry, to make the kind of money he does and tip so poorly says a lot about him. I was one of his biggest fans for years taking shots from friends about what a douche he was and I defended him. It’s getting harder to do with the drama queening he does and then to hear this? He’s probably one of those cheap greedy types who thinks he’s being generous tipping 10% after a great meal and great service.

He’s been insulated and adored his whole life, never had a real job nor understands the little people who struggle in low wages jobs where tips help pay the month to month bills. I’m not saying he needs to tip like Phil or anyone else, but to stiff people is flat out sorry azz selfishness. It’s not like the courses host a PGA event every weekend and the guys/gals get tipped big every week. I’m still a fan, I just don’t have the same respect and admiration for him I did 10 yrs ago.

    • Niku

The most admirable men are those who refuse to give any tip, not one penny. Someone has to start doing away with this public theft, this beggary.

  • Lou Linden

Disappointed to hear Tiger doesn’t tip appropriately, something I always frown upon. I heard he was like that since college days so at least it wasn’t something he developed after getting rich, it’s just the way the guy is.

That being said I think Reilly could have tempered it a bit and mentioned all of the money his charities have raised as well. I think Tiger’s charitable contributions have outpaced Reilly’s tipping of valets and waitresses over the years.

When you become as famous as Tiger has everything is under the microscope and plenty of people will use him to make money for themselves whenever possible, as in Reilly’s case.

While slamming Tiger for his tipping style he could have brought up Phil’s insider trading woes but I’m sure that’s not in the book.

Hey Phil, Blue Horseshoe loves Anacott Steel!

  • gerry tierney

Well, I know for a fact that Phil tipped $100 to everyone working in the restaurant at Oakmont, after breakfast, on at least one morning of the 2007 US Open. I wish Tiger could get his game back though! What a joy to watch when he is on and contending, especially going head to head with Phil and a few others.

  • F_This

Here is a tip for you arseholes. Tiger can do what he wants with HIS own money. Get over your petty little broke arse selves.

    • Niku

Too bad there are not more like you. Something has to be done to stop the vile practice of tipping.

    • Ferd Berfel

And people can hate him and talk crap about him too. Get over the comments about him.

  • FullRoost

I have a signed copy of SI with him on th ecover all P.O.’d after getting spanked in Ryder Cup.
Amazed he even signed it. Anybody want to buy it, lol?

  • Nich Radcliffe

Phil loves to show off for the media…Nobody who’s ever spent time around Phil when no cameras or other media were around will praise him.

    • capcomm

I have to admit, I love this whole Tiger/Phil, “who is the real p***k” narrative. It is a great opportunity for grown men to get in touch with their feminine side by gossiping like little girls. Btw, I am running out now to buy Reilly’s new book. =8-)

  • capcomm

Jack Kennedy was another rich philanderer who never carried cash. His entourage had to pay for everything, even when he was in college. Look if up if you don’t believe me.

  • capcomm

Right. Your Caddy is a hilarious, fun read. Can’t wait to jump into this one. Too be fair, Tiger is generous, just in more institutionalized way, i.e. Tiger Woods Foundation. I would aver that Tiger is highly managed/controlled and doesn’t like to draw attention to himself by flashing cash around. I have seen him being hounded by fans on the course and it is not a pretty picture. Phil doesn’t have to put up with quite same level as frenzy.

    • Jeff Sheaffer

Tiger Woods has made over $750 Million in endorsements and has UNLIMITED free time. So what he puts his name on a charity. How about making a difference in younger people’s lives OR better yet start companies and EMPLOY people with all your millions! The same with Oprah .She is worth $2 billion and plays the race card ! Here latest quote is that older white people have to die off before we see the end of racism!

      • Art DiGiacomo

Obviously you have been living under a rock Jeffy boy.

  • wghaole

tipping is so overdone in America – you get the feeling that everyone is competing with each other once they start throwing bills on the table at the end of a meal. America needs to pay their restaurant staff a decent wage and benefits – like they do in Europe – instead of $ 2.13 /hour and expect the customers to make up the difference to at least a minimum wage. Thumbs down on the entire subject of who is a better tipper – it brings America into disrepute!

    • Jeff Sheaffer

It’s okay for a person worth over $ 750 million to be cheap .Worse yet how about creating employment with starting up companies vs. selling your name to the highest bidder?

    • Niku

      Exactly right.

    • Ferd Berfel

Wrong. Tipping is performance based like golf. Only whining underperformers talk like this.

  • roughrider

My brother in-law was at the first masters Tiger won on Saturday at the players tent and he asked Tiger to sign his badge and Tiger said”…I won’t sign that it would be worth to much..”

  • Luke Vaughan

He’s a shmuck. Bad place to be when the wheels come off.
BTW: Los yippis son eternos…as in permanent !
Watch, or better yet, don’t !

  • Ron Walters

Aside from being a BUM,& Cheap,he ALSO TOO OFTEN OVERLOOKED THE RULES OF GOLF.TO SUIT HIM..(,and got away with it) having 25 -30 spectators moving the boulder & he plays the shot making a birdie and wins the tourney is a joke…Maybe his next trick will be walking on water and play a shot without penalty.

  • Jack Wullkotte

While I worked for Jack Nicklaus, I traveled with him now and then, and, I can attest that he never carried cash. As a matter of fact, after we were done eating, he would look at me and say, give me a fifty or twenty and after I gave it to him, he would pay the bill. I never got any change back, so what was left after paying the bill, must have gone for the gratuity. The following day, I would go into the office, ask Jack’s secretary for the amount he borrowed and she would reimburse me immediately. Now, my daughter worked in the Frenchman’s Creek CC restaurant in Palm Beach Gardens, FL while going to Junior College, and said that when Jack came there for lunch with his entourage of 6 or 7 associates, after they were done eating, he would get up to go and tell his associates to take care of the bill. Not once while my daughter was their waitress did anyone leave a tip.
    True story.

    Jack Wullkotte

    • Niku

      Good for them.

  • Niku

Good for Tiger. The custom of tipping is an abomination and needs to be done away with. However, it is apparently necessary for some people’s egos. They just need to waste their money in order to feel like big shots. It’s no different, really, than lighting your cigar with a hundred dollar bill. What creeps.

  • G. Chapman

Tiger Woods Foundation has raised well over 50 MILLION dollars for charity and this moron has the nerve to say he’s cheap? How much has Rick Reilly donated to charity?

  • christopher

One of Tiger’s mistresses said once he was gambling in Vegas very drunk and won something like $400,000. He was so wasted he spilled all his chips as he tried to get into the elevator. She picked up handfuls of $5,000 and $10,000 chips for him and made sure they all got back to his room. She’d never asked him for anything before, but apparently she was having trouble making her rent that month and so she asked Tiger for a little help. Tiger dumped her on the spot and never spoke to her again. She said just one of those $5,000 chips would have solved her problems. But Tiger is so cheap he couldn’t even share a tiny slice of his good fortune with the girl he was boning for two years! As if Tiger Woods would miss a measly $5,000. Probably even forgot to cash in all those chips, and they’re still lying forgotten in a suitcase somewhere. What a self-centered cheapskate

  • Art DiGiacomo

Who the hell is Rick Reilly??? What does it matter to him who or what TW tips, is it coming out of his pocket. Some people will say anything to promote a bad book. Get a life what ever your name is.

  • Art DiGiacomo

Really, I never heard of him either.

  • Raymond Vecchio

He will not win unless he gets some gratitude. If he is cheap this explains everything, bad karma.Play every week get a smile on your face, stop your sulking you play a game for a living get some gratitude. Everybody is catching on to you. If your a cheapskate the whole world will be rooting against you and you will not win another tournament.

  • 2abner

i remember this guy now; all i can say is, “the thief judges by his condition”.
when rick reilly was covering the 2004 athens summer games, i was assigned as IOC volunteer for the vip area where SI would have a place inside as part of their olympics sponsorship.
i had the feeling of being ignored by him when was just trying to thank him for all the memories of his back page SI writing..

  • CLIFFORD ELISARY

Rick Reilly is like the rest JOCK SNIFFING TWITS WHO BEIEVE that if not given the time of day by the sports stars, that gives them the right to be overy critical….TUCK HIM!!!!!!!!

  • CLIFFORD ELISARY

I WILL GUARANTEE YOU THAT TIGER WOODS HAS GIVEN MORE MONEY TO HELP THE DISADVANTGED THAT RICK RIELLY HAS EARN IN HIS LIFE!!!!!!!~

  • islander21

The stories of Tiger’s cheapness are legendary. You know what…so are Arnold Palmer’s. Neither tips. Its been reported all over the place. Yes, Tiger should catch grief for not tipping. Its stupid. But he should also get noticed for all he does for charities. Some clown mentioned he should start something that will impact children….HOW ABOUT 3 SCHOOLS? He’s built a school out in Cali, in the DC area and I forget where the 3rd was…but I’m pretty sure these academies have employed teachers and, oh yeah…impacted children positively. I like to watch both Phil and Tiger play. I’m more of a Phil fan but like to see Tiger do well. I’d rather play a round of golf with Phil, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to kick Tiger when he’s down. I don’t think he’ll ever win another major, but I hope he proves me wrong. I do know he won’t break Jack’s record and I never thought he would. His swing was too violent to maintain.
Another point- those ripping Rick Reilly….he’s been voted Sportswriter of the Year around 10 times, so claiming he’s a nobody shows how little you know. He’s one of the most respected sportswriters out there.

  • TiredProgrammer

And Rick Reilly is who exactly, and why would anyone care what he thinks or writes? I’m betting Tiger could really care less!
