Malik Simmons is a junior defensive back that plays for the North Carolina Tar Heels. He was a big piece of the defense last season, and figures to be an even more prominent player in the grand scheme of things this year. We were able to do an exclusive interview with him and we hope that you enjoy it!
Q. Thanks for taking the time to do this interview Malik. How are you doing today?
A. I’m doing alright. What about you?
Q. Can’t complain at all. What have you been working on in particular this offseason?
A. Well we are just now about to start the offseason, but I plan to focus on getting faster, stronger, quicker feet, and flipping my hips even better.
Q. You became one of UNC’s key defensive pieces last year. What are your goals individually this coming season?
A. This coming season I want to show everyone my great leadership skills and on the field I want to play even faster with zero mistakes. I also want to become a great blitzing threat to our opposing teams.
Q. Who are your closest friends playing D-1 football? Do you know any NFL players?
A. My closest friend playing D-1 is T.J. Jiles, No. 37 on our team. I know Santana Moss, Philip Buchanon, Jeremy Ware, and Mario Henderson who are all known from my home town. I also know all the players who played here at UNC.
Q. What has been your “career highlight” so far? Perhaps one play or game that stands out?
A. There hasn’t really been one play or highlight, just a good game I played and that was against State. For one whole series all you heard was my name on the play and all around that was probably my best game. Hopefully this season they throw the ball my way because last season they didn’t. The very few times they did I got a PBU.
Q. Who has made the biggest impact on your career so far?
A. Besides Tre Boston, my position coach Vic Koening. He just constantly reminds me that I can be an All-American. I believe it and so does he and it boosts my confidence because he has been in the game so long and has seen so many All-Americans.
Q. What do you enjoy doing in your free time off the field?
A. In my free time I like to relax, rehab my body, and spend time with friends. But our free time is very limited.
Q. What advice would you give to a young DB with D-1 dreams?
A. I would tell them that you were recruited for a reason so never be scared to play and show your talents. Also, it will still be all about the books because without them you won’t be able to play. Last, it will be hard but it will pay off in the end.
Q. Anything you’d like to say to the college football world in closing?
A. I’m going to be great! Haha. Besides that, Carolina is going to make a lot of noise this season.
