Denver Nuggets fire coach George Karl

The Denver Nuggets have parted ways with head coach Gorge Karl, who was named NBA Coach of the Year just a month ago, reports Yahoo! Sports Adrian Wojnarowski.

Karl, who is in his final year of his contract, wanted an extension but the Nuggets balked at the request.

Karl’s reported exit follows that of general manager Masai Ujiri, the NBA’s Executive of the Year, who left Denver to become the Toronto Raptors’ executive vice president of basketball operations.

Karl was named the NBA’s Coach of the Year after leading the Nuggets to a 57-win season and a third seed in the Western Conference.  They were ousted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors.

The Nuggets made it out of the first round in the postseason just once in nine appearances with Karl, who has 1,131 victories as an NBA head coach.

Wojnarowski also reports the Nuggets will reach out for permission to speak with Indiana Pacers associate head coach Brian Shaw and Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins.
