San Francisco 49ers close to setting NFL turnover record

The San Francisco 49ers have protected the football better than any other team in the NFL, which has them close to matching an NFL record.

The 49ers haven’t committed a turnover in six consecutive regular-season games, the second longest streak in NFL history. Dating back to last season the 49ers can match the league record set by New England in 2010 on Sunday night against the Detroit Lions, reports the NFL.com.

The 49ers last turnover was on Thanksgiving night last year against the Baltimore Ravens when Alex Smith threw a second-quarter interception.

Since then, Smith hasn’t thrown an interception in a franchise record 185 consecutive regular-season passes, according to the NFL.com.

The last 49ers fumble happened 36 consecutive quarters ago when Vernon Davis fumbled on Nov. 6 against Washington.

Running back Frank Gore enters Sunday nights game with a career-best of 220 rushes and six receptions without a fumble while back up Kendall Hunter has never fumbled in 17 career games.

The 49ers led the NFL with a plus-28 turnover differential last season, finishing 13-3 and making their first appearance in the playoffs since 2002.
