Redskins may re-sign Chris Cooley

The Washington Redskins may re-sign tight end Chris Cooley.

The Redskins released Cooley on Aug. 28 after he spent eight years with the team. General manager Bruce Allen says the door is still open for Cooley to rejoin the Redskins.

“Yes, absolutely that door is still open, we have a meeting next week.” Via the Washington Post.

When the Redskins released Cooley he told them he wanted to find a starting job with another NFL team. After spending some time to figure out what he wants, Cooley says he still wants to play in Washington and he’s not ready to retire.

“I guess it’d be like going back to an ex-girlfriend that you never got over,” Cooley said. “But this is where I want to be. It’s where I want to live. It’s where I want to play, and I still want to play.”

The Redskins may sign Cooley to backup starting tight end Fred Davis or fullback Darrell Young. Niles Paul and Logan Paulsen already back up Davis, so the Redskins may have Cooley backup fullback Young.

“We have three tight ends,” Shanahan said via the Washington Post, “so it’s not like we’re very deep at the position… . With one fullback, that’s not very deep. So there’s a lot of possibilities. I can’t tell you for sure what’s going to happen at this time. But we’d like to have as many options as possible and … we’ll get a chance to talk next week.”

If the Redskins sign Cooley after Week 1, they wont have to guarantee his salary for the season.

Cooley has caught 428 passes for 4,703 yards and 33 touchdowns in his NFL career.
