Bradley Wiggins wins Tour de France

Bradley Wiggins became the first British pro cycler to win the Tour de France after a dominating performance in Saturday’s final time trial.

Wiggins won the final long time trial in Chartres ahead of his teammate Chris Fromme to seal the yellow jersey and win the Tour de France. Fromme finished 3 minutes, 21 seconds behind the leader while Vincenzo Nibali of Italy finished 6:19 off the pace for third.

1984 was the last time two cyclist from the same nation finished first and second in the Tour.

Wiggins was asked in his post-race press conference if his Tour would be remembered as boring.

“I think the Tour is a lot more human now. If people want to see incredible 220km lone breaks in the mountains, well maybe that’s not realistic anymore, as wonderful and as magical as they were to watch. I remember in the 90s watching people like Virenque, but maybe the sport’s changed now.”

On Sunday Wiggins rode at the front of the pack with his teammates and protected the yellow jersey as the cyclist rode into Paris on the final processional ride.

Teammate Mark Cavendish of Team Sky earned his fourth straight sprint victory on the Champs-Elysees. He also claimed his third Tour stage win this year for an overall of 23.

Wiggins never placed worse than second in the general classification; he was second in the prologue and won the two long time trials.

The top American rider Van Garden Tejay finished 5th, 11:04 off the leaders pace.
