U.S. beats Japan 5-2 to win Women’s World Cup

The U.S. Women’s National team won its first World Cup in 16 years on Sunday by dominating defending champion Japan 5-2.

Carli Lloyd recorded a first-half hat trick as the U.S. women scored four goals in the opening 16 minutes. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath also scored for the U.S., while Yuki Ogimi and Julie Johnston (own goal) scored for Japan.

This is the USWNT’s third World Cup triumph and first since 1999.
