The Denver Broncos had four turnovers and managed to score just one touchdown against the Seattle Seahawks in a 43-8 Super Bowl loss Sunday night at MetLife Stadium.
“I think we played a great football team,” said Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning. “We needed to play really well in order to win and we just didn’t come anywhere close to that. We weren’t sharp offensively from the very get-go. The turnover on the first play of the game, giving them a safety – not the way you want to start a game.
“For whatever reason, we couldn’t get much going after that. But I give Seattle a lot of credit. They’re an excellent football team and they caused a lot of our mistakes. At the same time, we just didn’t play well tonight.”
Manning completed 34 of 49 passes for 280 yards and a touchdown pass to Demaryius Thomas. He also had an interception in the first quarter and another one returned 69-yards for a touchdown.
Manning’s total quarterback rating of 24.4 was his lowest of the season.
Thomas set a new Super Bowl record with 13 catches. He finished the game with 118 yards receiving. The previous record was 11, set by Jerry Rice, Deion Branch, Dan Ross and Wes Welker.
The Broncos were held to 306 yards of total offense and converted just 6-of-13 on third downs and were 0-3 on fourth down.
“They have an excellent defense and certainly to get behind and give them the lead played into their hands,” Manning said. “That’s what they do to a lot of teams. They can get the lead on a team. It definitely benefits their team and their defense. We certainly didn’t want to do that. We wanted to keep the game on the field, keep the score even. Got behind early, never could make a run to catch up. From that standpoint, it was definitely a disadvantage for us and an advantage for them.”
Manning, who set NFL records with 5,477 passing yards and 55 touchdowns, fell to 1-2 in Super Bowls and 11-12 overall in the playoffs.
“Well, it’s disappointing for our entire team,” Manning said of the loss. “We worked hard to get to this point. Overcame a lot of obstacles to be here. Put in a lot of hard work, did some really good things just to have this opportunity. But certainly to finish this way, it’s very disappointing. It’s not an easy pill to swallow, but eventually we have to.”
