Dimitri Patterson rejoins Jets after 48-hour ‘unexcused’ absence

After missing for nearly 48 hours, New York Jets cornerback Dimitri Patterson returned to the team’s facility Sunday night and met with coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik.

Patterson did not attend the Jets preseason game against the New York Giants on Friday and was not present for the team’s practice on Sunday.

“He’s been helpful as a veteran. He’s been helpful to our young guys because we knew our young guys were going to get increased reps going down the stretch of preseason,” Idzik told reporters. “So there really wasn’t any warning that we had of something like this. There was nothing to indicate this kind of behavior.”

Patterson, 31, attended meetings Friday and also was at the team’s pregame meal.

“My first emotion obviously is his well-being. That was what you’re concerned with first and then selfishly we want Dimitri on this football team,” said Ryan. “I think we made that clear when we signed him that we had big plans for him and obviously we’d like to see him out here. So I’m a little shocked that he wasn’t here (and I) still feel that way. I’m not real comfortable talking about it until we talk to Dimitri and find out what’s going on.”

The 31-year-old Patterson has nine career interceptions and totaled four in just six games last season with the Dolphins.

“Oh shoot, you just go on. You go about your business, you coach the guys that are here, the guys that are healthy, and that’s what we are going to do,” Ryan said. “We don’t look back regardless. We hope Dimitri, that everything works out, and that he is with us and things. But again, we are going to be full steam ahead, and that’s the way we’ll handle our business.”
