Adrian Peterson’s 2-year-old son dies after assault

The 2-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has passed away in a South Dakota hospital after being severely beaten, allegedly by the boyfriend of the child’s mother, according to a TMZ report.

According to the Argus Leader, Joseph Robert Patterson, 27, has been charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery of an infant.  A judge set his bail at $750,000 cash during his initial court appearance Friday.

Sioux Falls Police Lt. Blaine Larsen said Patterson was the only one home with the 2-year-old boy on Wednesday. The boy lived there with his mother and her boyfriend, Patterson.

“It was a fairly new relationship,” Larsen said.

Patterson called police at 5:43 p.m. Wednesday, reporting the child had choking injuries.

The child was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Peterson missed Thursday’s Vikings practice, but was back with the team and plans to play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.

“I will be playing Sunday, without a doubt,” Peterson said Friday.

“I really appreciate all the support from fans and the Vikings,” he said. “I ask y’all to respect my privacy.”

We send our sincerest condolences to Peterson and his family.
