San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver tore his left ACL in Thursday’s team workout, reports ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
According to Schefter, Culliver will miss the upcoming season. He was carted off the field with an apparent left knee injury just 45 minutes into Thursday’s workout. He was covering a punt in a non-contact drill when he went down in pain. He held his left knee and buried his head in his hands before being taken off the field.
Drafted in the third round out of South Carolina in 2011, Culliver played primarily as the 49ers third cornerback. He had 47 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble last season.
Culliver is known for openly saying before Super Bowl XLVII that he would not welcome a gay teammate.
Culliver joins Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis, who suffered a “slight fracture” in an unspecified bone in his right hand, and wide receiver Michael Crabtree, who suffered a torn Achilles in May, on a growing list of injured players for the defending NFC champions.
