Report: Mike D’Antoni to return as Lakers coach

Mike D'Antoni

Mike D’Antoni oversaw the worst season in Lakers history, but the embattled coach will be back for the 2014-15 season, according to the O.C. Register.

After 10 days of soul searching, the key figures in Lakers management are agreed on bringing back D’Antoni for a third season as coach, a source with knowledge of the deliberations told the Register.

But the Lakers have yet to inform D’Antoni of their decision.

Ramona Shelburne of reports that D’Antoni has asked the Lakers to pick up the team option on the fourth year of his current contract.

D’Antoni has grown frustrated with the pace of the process, believing each day that his status remains unresolved further hampers his ability to successfully perform the job next season if he is retained.

D’Antoni, who coached the Lakers to a 27-55 record this season, is under contract for one more season at $4 million. The Lakers hold a $4 million team option on him for 2015-16.
