The Portland Trail Blazers are hoping to make a splash in free agency after signing Evan Turner and they seem to have their eyes on a few different targets. They would like to bring in an upgrade to their front-court and have narrowed down on one player that would be a massive upgrade in particular.
According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowki of Yahoo! Sports, the Blazers are aggressively pursuing free agent big man Pau Gasol.
Gasol would be a huge pickup for the Blazers and would immediately push them towards the top of the Western Conference. They showed last season that they can compete with teams like the Golden State Warriors, especially with their star-studded back-court of Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum. All they were missing was a legitimate post presence.
Last season with the Chicago Bulls, Gasol ended up averaging 16.5 points, 11.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game. He shot 46.9 percent from the field overall and knocked down 34.8 percent from the three-point line. Those numbers show why the Blazers would be very smart to make a move for Gasol.
At 35-years-old, Gasol is without question one of the top free agents on the market. He would bring a lot of much needed experience for the Blazers and still has a solid all-around game.
Portland will not be the only team that has interest in signing Gasol. The San Antonio Spurs are expected to show some level of interest, although they are waiting on Kevin Durant’s decision.
Expect to hear plenty more rumors come up about Gasol in the next day or two. He is going to be highly sought after and teams will begin showing the most interest in him after Durant signs. Portland is certainly a contender to sign him and would take a huge leap forward if they get the job done.
