Justin Verlander’s gem sends Detroit Tigers to ALCS

Justin Verlander pitched the Detroit Tigers into the American League Championship Series with eight shutout innings in a 3-0 win over the Oakland Athletics.

“It felt good out there,” said Verlander, who struck out 10. “It’s the first time in a while my changeup’s been really good. Obviously in this lineup, with a bunch of left-handed hitters, that was a big pitch for me.”

The Tigers advance to face the Red Sox Saturday at Fenway Park to open the ALCS.  The Tigers went 4-3 against Boston this year.

Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer into the left-field seats in the fourth inning for his first homer since Sept. 17.

“I mean, I want them to pitch me away, you know,” said Cabrera. “I want to extend my hands the opposite way. Like I say, that’s my game. He made a mistake right there and I was able to turn it around and take a pitch up.”

Victor Martinez scored an add-on run on Omar Infante’s fielder’s-choice RBI in the sixth inning.
